Pick Greenlight Guru if you're a device company that still designs and changes its products and wants design controls, risk and the QMS in one system. Pick MasterControl if you're a large or multi-site manufacturer, especially one that also makes drugs, with a quality team that can configure an enterprise platform.
These two often come up together, but they solve different problems. Greenlight Guru builds software only for medical device companies, and its strength is the product development side: design controls, risk and traceability. MasterControl has sold compliance software since 1993 and serves pharma and devices on one platform, with its strength in document control, training, CAPA and manufacturing. A MasterControl user on r/MedicalDevices summed up the difference in 2021: MasterControl is “not as straightforward as GLG. But it handles complex projects and files well!”
Who each is built for
Greenlight Guru fits device companies preparing for or just past a 510(k) or CE mark that want design and quality in one place. Reddit users with experience of several systems recommend it for single-product or early-stage firms.
MasterControl fits larger organisations with a quality team that can configure processes; one Reddit user who has used five systems calls it their favourite on that condition. It also suits companies that make both devices and drugs, because deviations, management of change and batch records are core features. A 20-year customer on TrustRadius warned: “if you want a turnkey solution, this is not it.”
Price and contract terms
Greenlight Guru publishes an entry price of $12,000 a year, with implementation quoted separately; Vendr reports deals from $20,975 to $54,739.
MasterControl publishes no price and licenses per named user. Capterra lists the Basic package from $25,000 a year, and Basic covers only documents, change control and analytics; a device company needs the Complete package for quality events, risk and audits. Vendr shows MasterControl contracts from $72,339 to $116,837 a year, but from only four purchases by two buyers. MasterControl’s price signals sit well above Greenlight Guru’s, though neither set is tied to a team size and one of MasterControl’s Vendr buyers has 201–1000 employees.
Users of both report costs rising with headcount. A current Greenlight Guru customer wrote in 2026 that “the cost is starting to hurt a bit as the team grows.” At MasterControl, one Capterra reviewer reports a 300% cost increase after a licensing change.
Neither caps renewal increases. Greenlight Guru can raise fees at each renewal with 90 days’ notice, and order forms renew unless either side gives 60 days’ notice. MasterControl renews at “then-current fees”, sends a renewal estimate at least 60 days before the term ends, and doesn’t let you reduce licences during a term. One Vendr buyer reports a 7% yearly uplift at MasterControl, reduced to 5% by signing for two years.
On exit, Greenlight Guru gives you 90 days after termination to request an export, says records export in standard formats without paying for services, and offers a JSON API. MasterControl provides “an electronic file containing the Client Data” on written request, without naming a format, plus an API Toolkit.
Product scope
Design controls are the clearest gap. Greenlight Guru’s design control matrix links user needs, inputs, outputs, verification and validation, and trace graphs flag missing links across design, risk and tests. It syncs with Jira and GitHub and offers IEC 62304-aligned release management. MasterControl describes design control, DHF and DMR as documents rather than linked requirements and tests, and its risk module describes no ISO 14971 risk file. We found no Jira or Git integration, and one device team keeps its trace matrix in JAMA and Excel alongside MasterControl.
The post-market and production side favours MasterControl. Its product page says you can create FDA eMDR XML packets and launch an MDR form from a complaint. Electronic device history records come with its separate Manufacturing Excellence product. Greenlight Guru’s complaint flow includes a reportability decision that creates a task to prepare the FDA report, but we found no eMDR submission and no documented device history record workflow. One Greenlight Guru customer said “GG just isn’t ready” for a manufacturing system.
Both include validation material at no extra cost: IQ, OQ and PQ documents with every Greenlight Guru release, and MasterControl’s Validation Excellence Tool and Validation on Demand.
Usability and support
Greenlight Guru rates higher on G2 for both ease of use and quality of support. MasterControl reviewers describe a “large training burden”, weak search and a dated interface, while others say it’s simple for everyday users once set up.
Go-live and hosting
Greenlight Guru quotes two to eight weeks for most implementations; MasterControl quotes about 90 days for its Qx Starter package and longer for traditional implementations.
Greenlight Guru’s 2022 architecture overview says data stays in one region set in the order form: the US, Germany, Singapore or Australia. MasterControl lists its AWS hosting location as “Global”, and its European DPA allows processing wherever it or its subprocessors have facilities. EU buyers should get the hosting region in writing from either vendor.
Choose Greenlight Guru if…
- you’re still developing devices, or software as a medical device, and want design controls, risk and traceability linked in the QMS;
- you’re a team of roughly 10 to 50 people that wants to go live in weeks rather than months;
- you want German hosting set in your order form.
Choose MasterControl if…
- you’re a large or multi-site manufacturer, or make both devices and drugs;
- you have quality staff to configure and run an enterprise system, and keep design traceability in a separate tool;
- you need eMDR support and, later, electronic device history or batch records on the same platform.
