Pick TrackWise Digital if complaints with a reportability decision tree, eMDR and an ISO 14971 risk file linked to CAPAs matter most, or you already work on Salesforce. Pick MasterControl if documents, training and CAPA are your core, you want validation tools included and electronic device history or batch records on the same platform later, and you want a vendor whose price we can at least estimate.
Both are enterprise QMS with long histories in pharma and medical devices. MasterControl has sold compliance software since 1993 and reports more than 1,250 customers. TrackWise has been sold since at least 2001. Honeywell bought its maker, Sparta Systems, in February 2021, and the cloud version, TrackWise Digital, is built on Salesforce. MasterControl is strongest on documents, training and CAPA; TrackWise Digital on complaints, eMDR, risk and supplier quality.
Who each is built for
MasterControl fits larger, often multi-site organisations with a quality team that can configure the system. A 20-year customer on TrustRadius warned: “if you want a turnkey solution, this is not it.” Its Qx Starter package targets young companies.
TrackWise Digital fits larger device, diagnostics and combined device-and-pharma companies; SGS rolled it out across 17 sites. Much of its language is pharma GMP: deviations, out-of-specification results and batch release. Its QuickTrack package, added in March 2026, targets startups and small and medium-sized companies.
Both suit companies that make devices and drugs. MasterControl covers deviations and management of change, and its separate Manufacturing Excellence product adds electronic device history and batch records.
Price and contract terms
Neither publishes prices. MasterControl licenses per named user. Capterra lists its Basic package from $25,000 a year, but a device company needs the Complete package for quality events, risk and audits. Vendr shows contracts from $72,339 to $116,837 a year, from only four purchases. From these we estimate $25,000–72,000 a year for 10 users on Complete, plus implementation.
Honeywell’s pricing page says TrackWise Digital’s cost depends on user licences, processes and implementation. Its own AppExchange listing shows $200 per user per month as the lowest starting price, last updated in March 2022. For 10 users that is about $24,000 a year before implementation. It is a vendor figure with no independent signal next to it, so we don’t estimate from it. QuickTrack includes implementation; elsewhere it’s priced into each quote.
Neither caps renewal prices. MasterControl renews automatically at “then-current fees”, sends a renewal estimate at least 60 days before the term ends, and doesn’t let you reduce licences during a term. One Vendr buyer reports a 7% yearly uplift, cut to 5% by signing for two years. TrackWise Digital’s fees are invoiced annually in advance and can’t be cancelled. The contract renews for 36 months unless the order form says otherwise, you must give notice 45 days before the term ends, and the agreement says nothing about renewal prices.
On exit, MasterControl provides “an electronic file containing the Client Data” on written request, without naming a format. TrackWise Digital returns data only if you ask within 30 days: CSV files from Salesforce, and files from AWS-hosted modules by secure transfer. Neither contract has an escrow clause, and both vendors can transfer the contract to a buyer without your consent.
Complaints and eMDR
Both cover US reporting. MasterControl’s product page says you can create FDA eMDR XML packets and launch an MDR form from a complaint; we found no EU vigilance or UDI features. TrackWise’s complaints module covers intake, investigation, risk assessment, reportability review, CAPA and trending, with a decision tree that identifies where an adverse event must be reported and sets the deadline. Its datasheet names FDA eMDR submission, and EU MIR reporting appears only on a marketing page.
CAPA, audits and suppliers
MasterControl lets you launch a CAPA from any quality event with its fields filled in, and its nonconformance process has five pre-configured steps. Training is triggered from document changes and CAPAs. TrackWise Digital’s CAPA has automated routing, notification, escalation and approval, and nonconformances and deviations carry investigations and trending.
For suppliers, TrackWise Digital lets suppliers answer audit findings in a portal. MasterControl covers the approved vendor list, qualification and scorecards, though one Capterra reviewer calls its audit and supplier modules outdated.
Design controls and risk
Neither manages design controls as linked records, and we found no IEC 62304 features or Jira and Git integration in either. MasterControl’s product development pages describe design control, DHF and DMR documents, and its risk module describes no ISO 14971 risk file. TrackWise Digital has no design controls, but its risk module keeps a risk file per product with hazard analysis, FMEA and a residual-risk matrix, linked to nonconformances and CAPAs.
TrackWise Digital is built on Salesforce, and integrations use Salesforce’s APIs; some modules run on AWS or other providers. MasterControl runs on AWS with its own API Toolkit.
Neither publishes a hosting region. MasterControl’s subprocessor list gives the location as “Global”, and its public European DPA allows processing wherever it or its subprocessors have facilities. TrackWise Digital’s DPA is only available on request, and the service agreement allows transfers to the US under standard contractual clauses.
Sparta Systems has a SOC 2 Type 2 report covering September 2024 to August 2025, and we found no ISO 27001 certificate. MasterControl states it holds ISO 27001 and other ISO certificates without publishing dates, and we found no SOC 2 report.
MasterControl’s Validation Excellence Tool and Validation on Demand are included at no extra cost. TrackWise Digital’s preconfigured processes are described as pre-validated, with Part 11 e-signatures and audit trails.
What users say and go-live
Both have review-drive caps in our scores. MasterControl rates 4.5/5 on Capterra from 540 reviews, with 4.1 for ease of use; 37% are labelled as invited with an incentive, and over half arrived in three bursts. Reviewers describe a “large training burden” and weak search, and cost comes up often. TrackWise Digital has 15 Capterra reviews, 4.3/5 overall, with 3.9 for ease of use. Capterra labels 14 of them as incentivized, and 9 arrived within nine days in June 2018.
MasterControl says Qx Starter implementations typically take about 90 days, and traditional ones longer. TrackWise Digital took three months for SGS’s first site and six months for a 50-person device company.
