What we like
- Mature document control, change control, training and CAPA that link to each other: a CAPA or document change can trigger retraining automatically.
- Validation tools (VxT and Validation on Demand) are included at no extra cost, and the starter package ships with URS and TPQ documents.
- Covers both device and pharma GxP processes (deviations, management of change, batch records), with a no-code builder for quality event forms and workflows.
- Built for scale: multi-site customers such as Fagron (35 sites), SSO, premium support options and FedRAMP authorization for its government edition.
- Customer service is rated 4.5/5 on Capterra (540 reviews, Sep 2026).
What to watch
- No public price. Capterra lists Basic from $25,000 a year, and Vendr's few recorded contracts run $72–117k.
- Design controls, ISO 14971 risk files and IEC 62304 support are thin; users keep traceability in other tools.
- Reviewers report a steep learning curve, weak search and a dated interface.
- Hosting location, minimum term and the format of your data at exit aren't published.
- Device history records need the separate Manufacturing Excellence product.
About the price: Estimate for 10 users of Quality Excellence Complete, Sep 2026. Floor: Capterra's $25,000/yr starting price for the Basic package; top: the lowest Vendr contract ($72k, larger buyers). Implementation is sold separately.
What is MasterControl?
MasterControl is a Salt Lake City software company that has sold compliance software since 1993.12 It grew for nearly 30 years without outside money, then raised a $150 million Series A from Sixth Street Growth in December 2022 at a $1.3 billion valuation.3 In September 2025 it reported more than $200 million in annual recurring revenue and more than 1,250 customers in nearly 40 countries.4
It sells three product lines on one platform:5
- Quality Excellence (Qx): the QMS we review here.
- Manufacturing Excellence (Mx): a manufacturing execution system with electronic device history records and batch records.
- Asset Excellence (Ax): calibration and maintenance.
Quality Excellence comes in Basic, Standard and Complete packages.6 A device company needs Complete, which adds quality events, risk and audit management to document control and training. There’s also a preconfigured “Qx Starter” package for young companies.7 Most of MasterControl’s language and customer stories come from pharma and GMP manufacturing, but medical devices are a core market.63
Who MasterControl is for
MasterControl fits best in larger, often multi-site organisations with a quality team that can configure and run the system. One Reddit user who has used five systems calls it their favourite “if you have a quality team that is actually able to configure processes”.8 A 20-year customer on TrustRadius put it more bluntly: “if you want a turnkey solution, this is not it.”9 It’s also a natural choice if you make both devices and drugs, because deviations, management of change and batch records are core features.1011
Look elsewhere if you:
- Are a small startup on a budget. The Qx Starter package exists, and one six-person device startup went live in about 30 days.12 But reviewers call MasterControl expensive and large for small companies.913
- Build software as a medical device. We found no IEC 62304 features and no Jira or Git integration. One device team keeps its trace matrix in JAMA and Excel and only stores released documents in MasterControl.14
- Need design controls and ISO 14971 risk files in the QMS. Design control support is document management rather than linked requirements, risks and tests.15
MasterControl pricing
MasterControl doesn’t publish prices on its own site. Its pricing page asks you to contact sales, and licences are per named user.5 Its plan comparison lists which modules come in each package, but no prices.6
Price signals we found (September 2026):
- Capterra and Software Advice list Basic “Starting at $25,000.00 per year”, with Standard and Complete on request.13 Basic covers only documents, change control and analytics.
- In 2019 MasterControl published per-user prices: $199 per user per month for its “All Access” starter kit (documents, training and CAPA), or about $24,000 a year for 10 users. The same page said “Pricing varies with your implementation and validation needs.”16
- Vendr shows a median of $115,673 a year, from $72,339 to $116,837, but that’s based on only four purchases by two buyers. One is a company with 201–1000 employees, which reported a 7% yearly uplift at renewal.17
Our working estimate for a 10-person device team on the Complete package is $25,000 to $72,000 a year. The floor is the published Basic price. The top is the lowest Vendr contract, which comes from larger buyers, so treat it as a rough upper bound. Implementation is sold on top: MasterControl markets “affordable implementation packages” for Qx Starter but publishes no price.7 Validation tools are included; extra validation services cost more.185
Features
MasterControl’s help center and data sheets are for customers or sit behind a lead form. We checked features against vendor demo videos, product pages and user reviews.1920
Document control, training and records
- Documents: you can route, approve and escalate files created in any software.21 Revision control, archiving, e-signatures and collaboration are standard.22
- Training: training is triggered from document changes and CAPAs, with role-based exams and an AI exam generator.236
- Users like the document hyperlinks: one Reddit user praises how referenced documents, including DHF documents, link directly to each other.24
CAPA, nonconformance and quality events
- Quality events: Advanced Quality Event Management offers a no-code form and workflow builder, with templates for CAPA, deviations, management of change and issue review.10
- CAPA: you can launch a CAPA from any quality event, and its fields fill in automatically.25
- Nonconformance: a pre-configured five-step process feeds CAPA.26
- Complaints and eMDR: sold under the “Postmarket Excellence” label. The product page says you can create FDA eMDR XML packets and launch an MDR form from a complaint.1 We found no EU vigilance or UDI features.
Audits and suppliers
Audits are planned with drag-and-drop scheduling, and you can launch supplier corrective actions or CAPAs from findings.27 Supplier management covers the approved vendor list, qualification and scorecards.2829 One Capterra reviewer, a compliance director, calls the audit and supplier modules outdated.30
Design controls, risk and production records
This is the weak area for device teams:
- Design controls: the “Development Excellence” pages describe managing design control, DHF and DMR documents, not linked requirements and tests.15
- Risk: the risk module offers workflows and signatures, but no ISO 14971 risk file is described.31
- Device history records: these need the separate Manufacturing Excellence product.11
AI
Since 2025 MasterControl has launched a document summarizer, translator, exam generator, SOP Analyzer and an event summarizer inside quality events. Its AI management system is certified to ISO 42001.32333435
What users say
- Capterra: 4.5/5 from 540 reviews, with 4.1 for ease of use and 4.5 for customer service (checked in a browser, September 30, 2026).30
- G2: 4.3/5 from 527 reviews, with 7.8/10 for ease of use and 8.6/10 for quality of support (checked in a browser, September 30, 2026).36
All 540 Capterra reviews were read in October 2026: Capterra labels 37% of them as invited by the vendor or by Capterra with a small incentive, and over half arrived in three short bursts (October 2022, October 2023 and October 2025).30 Because invited and burst reviews tend to skew positive, our usability, support and sentiment scores are capped at 8 rather than taken at face value.
Recurring themes:
- Steep learning curve and weak search. Reviewers describe a “large training burden”, trouble finding records and a dated interface.309
- Easy for everyday users once set up. Other reviewers call it simple for most end users.309
- Needs configuration skill. Reddit users report fields they can’t remove and a painful move onto a poorly configured instance.837
- Cost. 24% of recent TrustRadius reviewers raise cost concerns, especially for smaller businesses.9 One Capterra reviewer reports a 300% cost increase after a licensing change.30
First-hand Reddit comments are evenly split: four positive and four negative, once vendor accounts and people who don’t say they’ve used it are excluded.8372438
Security, hosting and validation
MasterControl states it holds ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27701, ISO 9001 and ISO 42001; it publishes no certificate dates, and its trust page still names the 2013 edition of ISO 27001.3935 We found no SOC 2 report for MasterControl’s own service. The platform runs on AWS, and its public subprocessor list gives the hosting location as “Global”.3940 A European data processing addendum with standard contractual clauses is public. It allows processing in any country where MasterControl or its subprocessors have facilities.41 We found no public statement on EU hosting, so EU buyers should ask where their data will live. Its government edition holds FedRAMP Moderate authorization.42
The Validation Excellence Tool and Validation on Demand are included at no extra cost, and the starter package ships with URS and TPQ validation documents.5187 SSO works for login, but users report that e-signatures still need a separate password.38
Buying and contract terms
- Trial: no self-serve trial.13 Recorded demo videos are on the website, and live demos go through sales.20 MasterControl’s terms allow free evaluations under a signed agreement, but they aren’t offered publicly.2
- Contract: the term is set in each quote, and subscriptions renew automatically at “then-current fees” unless you choose otherwise.43
- Leaving: on written request you get “an electronic file containing the Client Data”; the format isn’t stated.43 An API Toolkit can move data in and out.44
- Go-live: MasterControl says Qx Starter implementations typically take about 90 days, and traditional implementations take longer.12
- Price increases: the terms set no cap on renewal prices. MasterControl sends a renewal estimate at least 60 days before the term ends, and you can’t reduce the number of licences during a term.43 There’s no recent public price history: the last list prices date from 2019.1645 One Vendr buyer reports a 7% yearly uplift, cut to 5% by signing for two years.17 One Capterra reviewer reports a steep cost increase after the move to named-user cloud licences.30
- Growing the team: licences are per named user, so cost rises roughly in line with headcount unless you negotiate volume pricing.516
- If MasterControl is sold or closes: the terms have no escrow or insolvency clause. Your data comes back only on request after the contract ends, and MasterControl can transfer the contract to a buyer without your consent.43
Company and ownership
The contracting company is MasterControl Solutions, Inc., a Delaware corporation (file number 7091998) registered in Utah, with its head office in Salt Lake City.4346
- Ownership: privately held. MasterControl was profitable and bootstrapped to more than $100 million in recurring revenue before taking outside money. Its first external investor, Sixth Street Growth, led a $150 million Series A in December 2022 at a $1.3 billion valuation.3 We found no SEC filings.47
- Acquisitions: it bought Qualer, an asset management software company, in March 2025.48
- Accounts: the US company doesn’t publish accounts.47
Verdict
MasterControl scores 5.5. It’s a mature, well-supported QMS for documents, training, CAPA and audits, and a strong fit for large or combined device-and-pharma organisations that can configure it. Early-stage device and software teams should look elsewhere: prices, hosting and exit terms aren’t published, and design controls and risk management are weak.
